This simple setup is a natural solution that targets mosquito larvae, blackflies, and even fungus gnats — but leaves people, pets, and beneficial insects completely safe.

All you need is:
💧 A bin of clean or dirty water
🟤 A Mosquito Dunk (Bti)
🍂 Rotten food + leaves for bait

You can use this to clear pests from the forest, your backyard, or even a balcony setup. Just remember — don’t treat every water source, since these insects are also part of the food chain. Target only problem spots to keep the ecosystem in balance.

We’ve tested it and we noticed visibly less pests!

We really loved the atmosphere of Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in North Vancouver, Canada. The way they've developed the space in harmony with nature is truly admirable—it feels deeply connected to the forest rather than imposed on it.

While visiting, we noticed one of their workers building a fence and a small walking path, entirely by hand. It reminded us that sometimes the most sustainable methods are also the simplest.

Most of the materials used throughout the park appeared to be natural and renewable, which speaks volumes about their long-term commitment to the land.

The park’s story dates back to 1889, when a settler named George Grant Mackay began developing the area. What stood out to us was how he collaborated with members of the Squamish Nation—particularly August Jack and Willie Jack Khahtsahlano—drawing on Indigenous engineering knowledge to build the original bridge. Rather than damaging the environment, this early partnership laid the foundation for a legacy of respectful and thoughtful development that still endures today.

We drew so much inspiration from their approach and share the same goals in our own work—building with care, working with the land, and honoring those who came before us.

With the road complete, we’ve stepped into the next major phase: electricity.
This choice wasn’t taken lightly. We explored solar panels, underground lines, and even small-scale wind turbines—each with its own environmental and logistical hurdles.

Solar panels don’t emit greenhouse gases during use, but their production and disposal can carry significant environmental costs. Underground lines would have preserved the forest canopy, but the land has very little topsoil. Installing them would have required dynamiting through bedrock—a risk we weren’t willing to take.

In the end, we chose to connect to the Hydro-Québec grid. Quebec’s electricity is among the cleanest in the world, sourced primarily from renewable hydro power. Still, hydroelectricity isn’t impact-free—it can disrupt waterways and ecosystems.

To minimize our footprint, we’ll only be clearing an additional 5 meters along the roadside to install poles for the lines. Not a flawless solution—but a balanced one, based on our terrain and values.

In the future, we hope to offer fully off-grid cabins for those seeking a more radical approach to sustainable tourism. For now, we move forward with intention, learning as we go. 🌲⚡

We stopped by the home of Mandeville’s former baker — who’s now crafting the sweetest little birdhouses by hand. Each one is lovingly made in his workshop, tucked away in the woods. And yes, he still bakes too — offering fresh loaves of bread straight from his cozy kitchen.

We brought a few birdhouses home to create a quiet little sanctuary here at Ātman — a place where birds can nest, rest, and take shelter when the rain rolls in. A small touch of care, making the forest feel even more like home. 🕊️🍞🌲

In recent years, Canada — like many parts of the world — has faced an alarming rise in forest fires. With hotter, drier summers, even a small spark can ignite a devastating blaze. Here in Mandeville, where our cabins are tucked deep within the woods, fire safety isn’t just a precaution — it’s a responsibility.

As part of our construction process, we’ve carefully cleared select trees to make way for the road and cabins. But removing trees is only half the work — the real risk comes from what’s left behind.

Dry twigs, branches, and forest debris are highly flammable, especially during Quebec’s increasingly hot and dry summers. To reduce wildfire risk, we’ve chosen to responsibly dispose of this material through controlled burning, as permitted by local guidelines and with careful oversight.

This small but essential step helps protect not only our cabins — but the entire forest ecosystem that surrounds them.
